Mr Davenport went on: ""While the South gets sleet today, alternative tools of Britain will have sleet later, with a couple of centimetres in places.

""It might be a bit milder in the South in the subsequent couple of days, with some-more sleet than snow, but some-more sleet could follow in a little areas and there will be cold, north-easterly winds bringing probable snowfalls to Scotland and northern England on Thursday and Friday.

""At the begin of subsequent week it could be in all colder, with sleet presumably entrance in to southern areas as well.""

People were warned not to travel in the fells in the Lake District after climbers had to be discovered following an avalanche at Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag nearby Patterdale.
